What is Dye Sublimation Printing?

Dye sublimation printing (also known as dye diffusion) is a digital printing process that can transfer full-colour images onto a ceramic surface. It uses a process similar to colour computer printing, followed by transferring this image onto the surface of a cup. The surface is heated, transferring the picture and baking it in. This technique is a fast, accurate way to transfer full-colour images. The photo on your driver's licence or other identity card is a good example of a print made through the dye sublimation process.

If you have a photograph or other full-colour design you'd like to see on a mug, there's no better way to make it happen. The image printed onto the mugs will be extremely durable, basically lasting the lifetime of the mug itself. Dye sublimated mugs are dishwasher safe, though it is not advised to clean them with a scourer.

For a unique way to use this process, check out our can magic mug. An opaque layer of ink is printed over the full-colour image, making it seem like an ordinary cup. When you add hot liquid, the outer layer becomes transparent, bringing your image into view.
